Dog-Friendly Accommodation & General Rules
Many accommodation facilities in Calasetta gladly welcome domestic animals, particularly holiday homes.
- General Rules: Regional Ordinance Night access: The Regional Bathing Ordinance of Sardinia allows dogs access to all beaches in Sardinia (even those not designated as "dog beach") only from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM the following morning. Outside these hours, access is generally prohibited on free beaches not specifically designated.
- Designated Dog Beaches ("Dog Beach" or "Pet-Friendly Beaches"): Extended hours: Coastal municipalities have the power to identify and delimit specific areas of the coastline where animals are allowed access even during the day. These are the so-called "dog beaches" or "pet-friendly beaches." Signage: Municipal administrations must adequately mark these areas with specific signs indicating the rules. Cleanliness: Municipalities must ensure the cleanliness of these areas.
- Behavioral Rules and Documentation (Valid wherever access is permitted): Leash: The dog must always be kept on a short leash (generally no more than 1.5 meters). Muzzle: A muzzle, rigid or soft, must be carried and put on if necessary or upon request by authorities. Waste collection: It is mandatory to immediately collect your dog's droppings with special bags and dispose of them correctly (taking them away if there are no dedicated bins or putting them in specific bins). It is advisable to always carry a scoop and bags with you. Health and Documents: Dogs must be registered in the canine registry (therefore equipped with a microchip). They must be clinically healthy and up-to-date with vaccinations (particularly against common infectious diseases like distemper, leptospirosis, parvovirosis). They must be treated against parasites (endo and ectoparasites). It is advisable to always have the animal's updated health booklet with you.
- Control and Responsibility: The owner or keeper of the dog is entirely responsible for their animal's behavior and must constantly supervise it to prevent it from disturbing other bathers. Water and Shade: Always ensure fresh water and a shaded area for your dog, avoiding keeping it in the sun during the hottest hours. It is useful to bring a portable bowl and a mat to protect it from the hot sand. Swimming in the sea: Dogs can generally enter the sea in areas where access is allowed, unless there are specific local prohibitions.
